Even if you already lead a quite minimalistic existence, you can add some more luxury to your life without having to pay for it.

Berlin has a large community of left-leaning Ex-pats and Germans. Coupled with the fact that many people just stay here for only a few years, many people choose to use the various sharing projects to give their "stuff" a new life, often on a free basis.

Permanent acquisions:

  • Free your stuff Berlin has 135,000 members
  • Ebay Kleinanzeige has a "zu verschenken" section
  • There are multiple "free boxes" located throughout Berlin
  • Furniture of all types is simply left on the street, sometimes with a "Zu verschenken" sign on it
  • Free books can be found all over Berlin 
Borrowing options:
  • Fairleihen is a peer-to-peer lending system (great for power tools, board games, sport equipment, musical instruments) 
  • Leila is a "lending library" where you can borrow items for a specific duration
  • Zlb public library in Kreuzberg has started to lend items such as slacklines
  • Another Country is a second hand book store where you rent a book for any duration and pay 1.50€
  • BikeSurfBerlin offers bicycles on a pay-what-you-can or pay-how-you-can basis
Services
  • Kleinanzeigen has posts where you can get a free haircut
  • Bicycle repair can be very cheap if you are prepared to learn and  do the work yourself at the the multiple Selbsthilfwerkstatte around Berlin
  • Repair Cafes offer you the chance to learn how to and repair your things
