Accomodation (long and short term)

Longer term
You will probably be needing some shelter and somewhere to lay you hat after a busy day. Berlin's rental prices are still lower than the Western European average, but increasing annually.

It is one of the frustrations that you will have to deal with once you move here, especially if you plan to live in one of the more hip areas of the city (Kreuzberg, Neukoelln, Alt Treptow, Friedrichshain). Don't be surprised if you find it difficult to find a long term rental and need to take a chain of shorter term "Zwischenmiete" before finding a more permanent solution.

As your network of friends grow in Berlin, you will notice that you get more opportunities for longer term accommodation.

The most well known website is www.wg-gesucht.de and here are some pointers on what to include in any application for a WG (shared apartment).

  • Don't simply copy-and-paste - eg address your message to the person's name
  • Your reasons for coming to Berlin
  • How you occupy yourself, both working and socially
  • Personalise your requirements to the advertisement
  • Include what you think you can bring to the WG
  • Your financial situation to assure that you can pay the rent
  • Your age
  • Any links to social media accounts
  • Any links to projects you are working on

Shorter term
For those of you just visiting Berlin, you can check out one of the following to save money and get a deeper insight into city life
  • Couchsurfing - it helps if you have already hosted someone and personalise your messages
  • Bewelcome  it helps if you have already hosted someone and personalise your messages
  • Warmshowers   - for those of you who are on a bicycle tour
